SANTA CRUZ — The Santa Cruz Warriors will soon head to the Silver State to begin its 2012-13 season. A blur of an offseason will soon come to an end as the local D-League squad officially starts its season.

It seemed like just last week that the team was still the Dakota Wizards, battling in Bismarck, N.D., in the first round of the 2011-12 D-League playoffs.

So much has changed, and the season is still two sunsets away from happening.

“We’re excited to start playing games,” said Warriors coach Nate Bjorkgren. “I’m excited for the community of Santa Cruz for when we play our home games. We’ve been practicing for a long time, and now we’re getting ready to play.”

The Warriors tip off at 7 p.m. Friday against the Reno Bighorns. They will play seven games on the road before their home opener Dec. 23 against Bakersfield.

The players and coaches aren’t worried about the home opener yet. Right now, they just want to get ready for game No. 1.

Bjorkgren is a little nervous.

“There’s always butterflies,” the coach said. “That’s why I still like to coach. The competitiveness in me gets flowing.”

The Warriors played two preseason games, winning both. The second was a 129-126 triple-overtime game against the Texas Legends. Although the star was former NBA player Chris Douglas-Roberts who put up 49 points, the Warriors rallied from a 16-point defecit and did enough on defense in the third overtime to get the win.

“It was probably the longest preseason game in the history of basketball,” Bjorkgren said.
