WATSONVILLE — James Gomez won his first game as head coach as the Watsonville High boys basketball team defeated visiting Soledad 61-46 on Tuesday night.

Gomez, a two-time all-SCCAL player when he went to Watsonville in the late 1980s and early 90s, watched as his Wildcatz used a 15-0 run early in the third quarter to take the lead for good.

In the run, several players got involved. John Canero scored nine points, four by way of free throws. Kassem Green had a nifty put-back with 3:41 to play in the third quarter. A minute later, point guard Justin Carrancho threw the ball to a cutting Alex Chavez, who completed the alley-oop layup.

Canero completed the run with a three in the corner, putting Watsonville ahead 40-28 with 1:57 to play in the second quarter.

Soledad did its best to get back into the game, but for as much as it scored, it turned the ball over a lot.

Both teams had trouble getting things going in the first quarter. While Watsonville wasn’t getting its shots to fall early on, Soledad managed just three shot attempts in the first four minutes. Watsonville closed the first quarter with back-to-back buckets from Alex Chavez and George Ruiz to take a 16-11 lead.

Soledad was within a point of the lead several times. It came out of halftime and took the lead thanks to Mikahl Ogas.

Right away, Ogas went for a 3 but missed. He got a second chance to shoot and nailed a jumper to tie the game at 23-23. After a turnover, Ogas shot a three from the top and swished it, giving Soledad a 26-23 lead.

Chavez got Watsonville on the board in the second half with a contested layup. Soledad answered the score with an Ogas rebound and putback, putting Soledad ahead 28-25.

Watsonville then went on its 15-0 run to take the lead for good.

Chavez finished with 21 points on 7-for-15 shooting. Canero had 11 points on 3-for-9 shooting. Ruiz tallied 14 points going 4-for-6 on the court.
