WATSONVILLE—Christmas has come early for the nation’s top retailers as early shopping hours on Thanksgiving, Black Friday deals and the ease of online shopping get consumers in the mood to spend their hard earned cash.

Big-box retailers like Walmart, Target, K-Mart and Toys R Us gambled correctly when they decided to open their doors early on Thursday as shoppers happily exchanged the last slice of pumpkin pie for money-saving deals, even if they had to wait in long lines to get them.

In Watsonville on Thursday, shoppers lined up outside Target at the Overlook Shopping Center for the chance to get their hands on low price, big-ticket items such as big screen televisions, laptops and video game consoles.

By about 8 p.m., a line stretched from the front entrance to the fence overlooking Ramsay Park. Shoppers stood smiling, huddled against the night chill while members from the Watsonville police department and a private security firm looked on.

Target officially opened at 9 p.m. but shoppers started lining up at the Watsonville store much earlier in the day.

At the front of the line stood Luis Martinez, 16.

Martinez said he started waiting outside the store at 6 a.m. for the chance to pick up a Playstation 3, which Target had advertised for $199.99, and a Gateway laptop.
