Manuel M Martinez of Watsonville passed away on November 12, 2012 surrounded by family. At 78 he lost a year-long battle with stomach cancer.
Manuel was born in Dallas, Texas on December 24, 1933. His family moved from state to state due to seasonal work. In 1956 Manuel joined the United States Army. After 6 years and a station in Germany, Manuel was honorably discharged and moved to California where he met his wife the following year. He worked for the City of Watsonville Sanitation Department for 28 years but always kept busy in his retirement years. His favorite pastime was spending time with his wife at Chukchansi.
He is survived by his wife of 49 years, Terry Martinez, children Connie, Eleanor, Annette (Matt) Garcia, Linda (James) Mitchell, Manuel (Holli) and Martha, 17 grandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren, siblings Carmen, Manuela, Guadalupe, Hilda and Jane. He is predeceased by his siblings Aurora, Lazaro, Sergio and Jesse.
A rosary will be held at Ave Maria Memorial Chapel, 609 Main St., Watsonville on Tuesday, November 20 at 7pm. Mass will be on Wednesday, November 21 at 10am at Our Lady of Assumption Church in Pajaro followed by internment at Valley Public Cemetery. Reception to follow at VFW Memorial Hall in Freedom. Arrangements are entrusted to the care of Patrick and Debbie Carroll.
