REDWOOD CITY — The wet weather wasn’t the only thing that put a damper of Monte Vista Christian’s fourth-ever playoff football game.

Menlo High put out the Mustangs early and won 42-14 on Friday night in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division IV playoffs.

The Mustangs, one of three Santa Cruz County teams in the playoffs this year, was unable to follow their 2011 predecessor that advanced past the first round.

In the blink of an eye, Menlo did damage to the Mustangs.

While the stat line will show three rushing touchdowns, all by running back Heru Peacock, it was the passing of quarterback Jack Heneghan that set the Knights in motion.

Heneghan went to the air 18 times in the first half and compiled 310 yards and two touchdowns.

The Knights took a 14-0 lead with 7:22 to play in the first quarter on touchdown runs of five and three yards by Peacock. On the play before each touchdown run, Heneghan connected on a deep pass to wide receiver Max Parker.

The first connection they made pre-touchdown was for 51 yards. The second went for 43. Both times, it left the Monte Vista Christian faithful, who outnumbered the Menlo fans, stunned.

Monte Vista Christian had the ball in between those Menlo touchdown drives but ran just three plays before punting.
