Council approves ambitious trail plan

Posted: Thursday, Nov 15th, 2012

WATSONVILLE Hailing it as the catalyst for transforming the city into the ecotourism hub of the Monterey Bay region, the Watsonville City Council approved the ambitious Trails and Bicycle Master Plan Tuesday night, which will add 33 miles of new trails around the city, pending grant funds.

Bob Geyer, assistant director of public works and utilities, called the plan of trails a "wheel and spokes" map a trail would run in a circular loop along the border of the city, with many others branching off toward the center.

However, he advised that actual construction of the plan will not be implemented immediately, as the city will be applying for grants over a period of 20 to 30 years.

"We'll be chasing grants for decades to come," Geyer said.

The city currently has about seven miles of trails.

Small sections of the plan will be built as the grants are received, Geyer said. Which trails are built first will be determined by a priority list, a list of trails compiled during the series of public workshops held earlier this year that residents would be the most interested in.

Geyer said priority is determined by asking a simple question: "Where would you want to go right now?"

During the workshops, the public "overwhelmingly" expressed interest in building the trail leading from Airport Boulevard into Pajaro Valley High School, Geyer said.

"This is one of the trails we will look to build with the first grant money to come along," Geyer said.
