WATSONVILLE — Larry Bliske was a young Army draftee when he boarded a plane for Vietnam in 1968 with 300 other soldiers. When his tour was over, he boarded the same flight exactly one year layer with the 16 who were left.

The others, he said, had been wounded or killed in action.

Bliske, who was wearing a Purple Heart medal, a Bronze Star and an Army Commendation Medal for valor on his cap, attended the annual Veterans Day celebration at the Veterans Hall in Watsonville Sunday.

He comes every year from Lodi for the ceremony, which he said is a time to remember his time in the service, the people with whom he served and those who are currently serving.

“I was proud to go for my country,” he said. “I support the vets 100 percent.”

Hundreds of people packed the veterans Hall for the event, which began with a parade from St. Patrick’s Church to the Veterans Building and included awards to veterans of the year Robert Fiorilla, Sam Sugidono and Harry Wiggins. The ceremony was punctuated by the annual ringing of the bells and a rifle salute at the end.
