WATSONVILLE — For the past seven years, hundreds of hungry people have gathered in Hansen Park in Watsonville to enjoy the free Thanksgiving meal provided by the Swingtime Café.

But as owners Peggy Triplitt and Antonette Wood gear up to cook 45 turkeys and a dinner for dozens with all the trimmings — and turn to the community for its help in getting the food — they are considering making this year their last.

“It’s time for us to start thinking of our retirement,” Wood said.

It’s worth noting that the co-owners alluded to ending the meal last year, as well.

First, they figure they need at least 45 turkeys, as well as other Thanksgiving food ingredients and financial contributions to make the annual meal possible.

“Without the community’s help, we couldn’t do this,” Triplitt said.
