WATSONVILLE A section of East Beach Street was shut down Sunday after a water main burst, leaving workers to repair the pipe and fill in the crater left behind.

According to city worker Jesus Garcia, the line broke at about 6 a.m. Sunday. Crews were expected to repair the line throughout the day, he said.

The water main broke on the 300 block of East Beach Street, between Lincoln and Blackburn streets, in front of the Pajaro Valley Historical Association.

A six-foot wide crater was carved in the middle of the street, and at 10 a.m. workers were using a bulldozer to clear the mud away from the pipe.

Traffic was detoured through Lincoln Street.

It did not affect the Veterans Day parade, which marched on Main and East Beach streets to the Veterans Memorial Building, about two blocks away from the partially-flooded road.

Workers said the work would be completed on Sunday, and the repaving work would likely be done by the end of the week.
