SANTA CRUZ — Excitement came in waves Tuesday evening at the Democratic Central Committee’s celebration as poll results flashed across a big-screen TV showing President Obama taking the lead in the race for president.

Balloons wafted about the room and wine glasses could be heard clinking at Hotel Paradox in Santa Cruz where the party was held. Loud roars of cheers and applause erupted as major news networks posted another state’s tally in favor of Obama.

“I’s just truly amazing,” said John Dobbs of Santa Cruz. “I was really worried and uncertain. Wow, what a relief. I just heard over my phone that Al Jazeera and the BBC have already declared Obama the winner.”

Susan Hammer of Brookdale was among the revelers.

“I feel so relieved,” she said. “I just got word Obama will likely win. I am confident he will. Tonight is incredible.”

Cabrillo College instructor Angela Gleason said she was ecstatic.

“Not only is Obama winning, but I hear the Democrats will also win the Senate,” Gleason said. “I love it.”
Hallie Brown, 14, was another jubilant face at the celebration.

“I was really stressing about Romney catching up to Obama as the scores started coming in,” Hallie said. “I’m not old enough to vote but I like getting involved. I just didn’t care for most of Romney’s ideas and what he was supporting. I do agree with most of Obama-Care.”
