APTOS — The Aptos and San Lorenzo Valley high school girls water polo teams had played four times before Tuesday night, and those four contests were all decided by one goal.

Their fifth encounter was no different.

Cameron Kellogg scored with 51 seconds to play in the game, and San Lorenzo Valley held on for a 10-9 win against Aptos in the first round of the Central Coast Section Division II tournament.

The hellacious fourth period was a snapshot of the five games between the two teams. Eight goals were scored in the period, with the first four coming in a span of 48 seconds.

San Lorenzo Valley, which went into the period leading 6-5, saw Aptos tie it several times, but it never fell behind.

Jackie Stanger pulled Aptos even at 6-6 with 5:48 to play when she put in a goal seconds after the Cougars missed.

Twelve seconds later, Hayley Smith floated the ball past the Aptos goalkeeper, putting San Lorenzo Valley back in the lead at 7-6.

With 5:20 to go, Stanger was given a free look at the goal and put the ball in the back of the net. San Lorenzo Valley answered with yet another goal by Smith.

At the 4:07 mark, Aptos tied the game again, as Eliza Munger one-timed a pass from teammate Kylie Krbec.

With overtime looming in the background, San Lorenzo Valley made sure it wasn’t going to happen.

Haley Kammeier tried to surprise the Aptos front line, but the ball was stopped. After a turnover, Kammeier got a second opportunity and got the ball past the drawn-out goalkeeper, putting the Cougars ahead 9-8 with 1:34 to play.

Aptos had two chances soon after the goal to tie it once again but one was blocked by the goalkeeper and another chance was broken up by San Lorenzo Valley defender Rose Schroeder.

San Lorenzo Valley got its 10th goal from Kellogg and had to sweat out one final strike from Amanda Akiyama.

With the win, San Lorenzo Valley will play St. Ignatius on Saturday at a time and place to be determined.

• Soquel 11, Harker 4: At Aptos, the fifth-seeded Knights had little trouble with 12th seeded Harker in the first round of the CCS Division II tournament.

With the win, Soquel will battle Castilleja of San Jose on Saturday.
