A part of the Mutombo family tree is coming to Santa Cruz.
The Santa Cruz Warriors worked a trade with the Idaho Stampede on Monday that will bring Harouna Mutombo to the coast.
Mutombo was selected in the eighth round of Friday’s NBA Development League Draft by the Stampede.
The Warriors also receive the Stampede’s third-round pick in next year’s draft.
Mutombo is the nephew of retired NBA star Dikembe Mutombo, who was an eight-time All-Star and a four-time NBA Defensive Player of the Year.
But unlike his uncle, who was a presence inside the paint as a center, Harouna Mutombo is a 6-foot-4, 200-pound guard.
He attended Western Carolina, where he became the eighth player in school history to finish with at least 1,500 points and 650 rebounds.
He missed only one of 133 games for the Catamounts, averaging almost 29 minutes a game.
Mutombo averaged double digits in scoring in his final two seasons with the Catamounts.
In the trade, the Warriors sent Durrell Summers to the Stampede. Summers, a former Michigan State standout, was picked by the Warriors in the fourth round of Friday’s draft.
