WATSONVILLE The American Red Cross has been conducting blood drives in Santa Cruz County since the 1950s, with more than 41,000 units of blood collected in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties in the past decade.

But those efforts have always been guided from a field office in San Jose, leaving employees with long commute times and less time to conduct the drives.

Now, with a new field operations center in Watsonville, volunteers will be able to expand their services locally. The new center will be the first of its kind in Santa Cruz County.

The Northern California Blood Services Region recently signed a lease on the 2,400-square-foot business space at 125 Hangar Way. The first mobile blood drive based out of the new facility was held Oct. 31 at UC Santa Cruz, where 45 units of blood were collected.
