SANTA CRUZ — World-class surfers have converged on the west side of Santa Cruz for the annual O’Neill Coldwater Class. The surf contest, that draws talent from Hawaii, Portugal, Brazil, France, Australia California, as well as local big names, typically got off to a lackluster start Thursday in Round 1 with waves of three and four feet.

The surf further disintegrated as the morning unfolded and high tide wallowed ashore forcing officials to postpone the contest through Friday.

Santa Cruz is stop 9 of 10 on the Association of Surfing Professionals World Championship Tour. Opening day of competition saw several upsets unfold in round 1, with several ASP World Title contenders set to compete in round 2 when competition resumes, most today or Sunday.

“With the dropping swell and incoming tide we have decided to call competition off for today,” Rich Porta, ASP International Head Judge said Friday. “We’ll be back tomorrow morning at 7:45 a.m. to make the call for a possible start to Round 2.”
