WATSONVILLE — Maria Luisa Barragán of Watsonville died on Wednesday, October 10, 2012, while visiting her hometown in Mexico. She was 93.
Born in Ixtlán, Michoacán, México on Aug. 15, 1919, she was the oldest of nine children. On February 14, 1942, she married Francisco Barragán and had nine children. The family immigrated to Watsonville in 1967 where they lived and raised their family. She was an avid gardener and seamstress, having learned to sew at the age of seven. She was a devout Catholic, praying the Rosary daily and attending Mass. She took pride in her family, and her children frequently got together with her for family lunches.
She is survived by her family including her sons and daughters, Guadalupe (Joaquin) Segura, Armando (Delia) Barragán, Alberto (Elsa) Barragán, Lourdes (Bernardo) Sanchez, Maria Luisa (Ermando) Beltran, Francisco (Petra) Barragán, Sergio (Helen) Barragán, Alex (Jenny) Barragán, and Irma (Tony) Gonzales; 34 grandchildren and 37 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband, Francisco; Grandson, Michael Beltran; and one great-granddaughter.
Visitation will be on Sunday from 5-9 p.m. and a Rosary will be recited at 7 p.m. at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Monday at 1 p.m. at St. Patrick’s Church in Watsonville. A burial will follow at Valley Public Cemetery.
