Rothweiler, Kile win titles as Ocean season nears finale

Posted: Tuesday, Oct 9th, 2012

WATSONVILLE — Two more champions were crowned during Friday night’s 100-plus car marathon and the Taco Bravo sponsored series leader got his first feature win of the season at Ocean Speedway at Watsonville.

Santa Cruz’s Terry Rothweiler is the 2012 Bay Area Dwarf car champion, while San Jose’s Matt Kile won his career first American stock track championship.

It was the tightest point chase among any of the nine classes this season. The final race of the season wasn’t any different as Rothweiler finished one position ahead of Los Gatos’ John Wear in Friday night’s 20-lap feature. They finished third and fourth, respectively. Both five-time feature winners traded the point lead on several occasions throughout the season.

“Regardless of where I was in the race, it was necessary to finish in front of John,” Rothweiler said. “The dry-slick track made it extremely difficult to get any traction. I ran the top, the bottom and the middle looking for traction to hold my position. I love the competition. I enjoy racing with friends and racing dwarf cars is great for that reason.”

Rothweiler, a volunteer fireman and lifeguard, started in dwarf cars in 2008. His racing career began in go-karting, winning three grand-national titles and a pair of road racing titles by the time he was 18.

“All my racing was on pavement,” Rothweiler added. “After my first season on dirt in a dwarf car, it became a very enjoyable challenge. Now four years later, we still enjoy the challenge along with the championship.”

Kile concluded his championship season with five-feature wins. Watsonville’s Tony Oliveira won his third main event of the season last Friday night with Kile second. The win moved Oliveira into second place in the overall standings ahead of Hollister’s Sean Markley Jr. The 2011 rookie of the year winner finished sixth in the feature and third in the division.
