Joseph “Joe”Maximino Flores

August 21, 1943 – October 2, 2012

Long-time residence of Watsonville, Joe passed peacefully on October 2, 2012 after several days of being surrounded by numerous family and friends.   Joe was 69 years old. He was born in Aguascalientes, Mexico on August 21, 1943 to loving parents Anastacio and Eumelia Flores. In 1946 the Flores family settled in Watsonville. Joe is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years , Karen Ann Flores, his children Joe (Liz) Flores, Melissa (Steve) Fischer, & Emily (Morgan) Nelsen, his grandchildren, Joshua Miles and Parker Maximino, his brothers Armando (Liz) Flores, Harvey (Faye) Flores, Ray (Betty) Flores, & Dave (Rose) Flores and numerous nieces, nephews & grand nieces and nephews.

 Joe attended school in Watsonville. He graduated from Mora Central High School in 1961. That same year he joined the United States Air Force.  Joe was honorably discharged from the Air Force in 1965.

Joe met his wife, Karen, while he was in the Air Force in Texas. They were married in 1966. In 1966, Joe joined the Watsonville Police Department. While with the police department he served as a juvenile officer, homicide investigator, gang expert, tactical team member and narcotics officer. He established a water rescue team. Joe received numerous awards and recognitions for his outstanding service to his community. He was involved in many service agencies including Watsonville Boys Club, YMCA, Family Services Association of the Pajaro Valley and Lion’s Club International.

In 1981, Joe left the Watsonville Police Department to join the Santa Cruz Sheriff’s Department, working as a Deputy Sheriff. He also became a hostage negotiator, tactical team member, court security officer & coordinated the D.A.R.E program. In 1998, Joe retired from Law Enforcement after 32 years of service.

In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to the Fallen Officer Foundation, P.O. Box 67281, Scotts Valley CA 95076-7281 or Lion’s Club International Foundation, 300 22nd Street. Oak Brook, Illinois 60523-8842.

Visitation will be held at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel, 222 E. Lake Ave in Watsonville, Sunday October 7, 2012 3:00pm-6:00pm. A mass celebrating Joe’s life will be held Monday October 8, 2012 at 11:00am at Our Lady Help of Christians Valley Catholic Church, 2401 E. Lake Ave., Watsonville CA, with a reception following at the Kennedy Center located adjacent to the Church.
