WATSONVILLE — In addition to all of the pageantry that usually is included in Watsonville High’s annual homecoming football game, the school is taking time out this year to honor a former coach.

And the school hopes as many former students and student-athletes as possible come out in support.

The school will honor former coach Ron Gallino on Oct. 19, when the football team faces visiting Fresno Christian.

Gallino was the varsity coach from 1969-74 before becoming the athletic director, among other positions at the school.

“This is a very important ceremony,” said Principal Elaine Legorreta. “A lot of people coach, and a lot of people teach, but not a lot of people coach and teach and do it as long as he did.”

Gallino passed away Aug. 20 following complications from a surgery earlier this year. He was 75 and survived by his wife and two children.

He attended Chico State University, where he played football and eventually ended up enshrined in the school’s athletic Hall of Fame.
