WATSONVILLE — Alisal High football coach Sunil Smith raced over to Watsonville’s sidelines, all smiles after his team downed Watsonville 30-14 Friday night. He found Watsonville quarterback Eddie Mares and praised him for staying tough, being agile and keeping the hometown Wildcatz in the game.

Alisal’s Plan A didn’t work and it quickly went to Plan B with overwhelming results.

Jovan Villalobos had a big hand in Alisal’s first win over a Santa Cruz County team since 2008. He scored three touchdowns and rushed for 85 yards.

A ground attack didn’t produce the big 50-yard or 70-yard play that would be camera worthy. Instead, it was consistent positive-yard runs by several players that kept drives alive and moving.

It was never more evident than on Alisal’s first series of the game.

The Trojans’ first drive started at their own 15-yard line after stopping Watsonville on a fourth down. Although it didn’t pick up massive yards, the offense held onto the ball and kept the chains moving.

The drive took 17 plays and eight minutes. A one-yard run on fourth and goal by Villalobos put the Trojans ahead 6-0.

And then the Wildcatz immediately went three and out.

“We were hoping to get the big plays,” Smith said. “Credit to Watsonville because they didn’t give us that. It turned into a game where we could get long drives on them, and that’s what you want in an offense.”
