APTOS — One offensive play.
That was all it took for the Aptos High football team to show that it wasn’t going to let winless and undermanned Santa Cruz hang around Friday in the teams’ Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League opener.
Quarterback Alex Joh hit Antonio Andrade with a 38-yard touchdown pass on that play, and the Mariners — the defending SCCAL champions — scored touchdowns on all five of their first-half possessions en route to a 41-0 victory.
“Going into the game, we knew that when you went ahead, you’re going to stay ahead,” Joh said. “It was something that coming into the week we knew that once we got going we were going to continue to score.”
It was the third straight victory for Aptos (3-2, 1-0 SCCAL), which dominated from start to finish, enough that the fourth quarter was played with a running clock. The Mariners outgained the Cardinals (0-5, 0-1) 284-38 in the first half, and finished with 429-114 edge for the game.
“(Our players) have been practicing hard the past few weeks,” Aptos coach Randy Blankenship said. “They are starting to turn the corner a little bit.”
