WATSONVILLE — The new Watsonville Municipal Airport lobby was unveiled last week with a bright new look.
“The lobby has not been changed since it was built in 1974,” said airport manager Rayvon Williams. “We realized there was a lot of deferred maintenance in the lobby and we saw an opportunity to upgrade the lobby. The pilots and the public expect to see something a little more modern that what was here.”
The job initially got going with a restroom makeover to make the men’s and women’s restrooms ADA compliant. Once the project got rolling it eventually mushroomed into the front lobby as well. Work included a complete makeover for both restrooms, new tile floor for the lobby, a new front counter and aviation themed furniture. Now a wide screened TV hangs on the lobby, a snack machine and an ATM stand were installed
The counter and other lobby features were completed by local craftsman Thom Merida of Watsonville.
“I’m really passionate about this project, redoing the airport lobby,” Merida recently said. Williams said he wanted to focus on a local craftsman to do the lobby job.
