WATSONVILLE — The cash crop of the Pajaro Valley was celebrated over the weekend downtown at the 18th annual Watsonville Strawberry Festival at Monterey Bay. Thousands of people, young and old, flocked to the event that showcases strawberries served in a variety of fashions, including funnel cakes, ice cream, shortcake and nachos.
Live music set a backdrop for visitors to the festival who roamed through scads of food booths, information and networking stands, merchandise booths, games and face-painters. A kid’s carnival was a huge draw for families with more than a dozen rides and games set up on Main and Second streets.
“I love the strawberry festival and I love the great family atmosphere,” said Manuel Rivas of Watsonville. “I come to this every year with my family. It’s safe and fun for everyone. Watsonville police do a great job of keeping this festival safe for all.”
When asked about what food he had tried at the festival, Rivas, said, “I tried everything. Strawberry shortcake, kettle corn, you name it. And I hope to bring home a flat of strawberries as well.”
