APTOS — Aptos/La Selva firefighters respond to a fire at the Seascape Resort Wednesday morning.
Division Chief Mike Conrad said a fire broke out in a second floor restroom at 8:50 a.m. in the main building. Since Aptos/La Selva firefighters were already on the scene for an unrelated medical emergency they were able to tackle the fire within minutes.
"They put the fire out before the sprinkler system kicked on," Conrad said. "There was a lot of smoke and flame."
The fire was caused by a ceiling fan that malfunctioned in a hallway bathroom. Several dozen resort guests were evacuated and there were no injuries.
"The staff did an excellent job getting people out safely," Conrad said. "It was fortunate we were already on the scene when this happened."
