There are a lot of different emotions going through Brian Knight this week.

The Watsonville High alum is set to compete in the 2012 U.S. Paralympic Trials, the meet to decide who will represent the nation in the Paralympic Games in London later this summer.

The trials are scheduled for this weekend.

Knight has signed up to compete in the men’s 1,500-meter run. He will compete on Sunday morning unless a flood of competitors sign up today, forcing a Saturday-morning qualification prior to Sunday’s race.

“It’s unreal that it has snuck up on me,” Knight said. “I’m at school all the time and training. I’m so involved in that stuff that it’s a shock to know that it’s happening soon.”

Knight had a brachial plexus injury at birth that affects his right arm. According to several medical sites, the injury occurs when nerves in the brachial plexus, which is located near the spine, are torn or stretched. The injury can also occur in vehicle collisions or during sporting activities.

The injury hasn’t slowed down Knight from trying to achieve his goals.
