WATSONVILLE — Construction workers are making huge strides in the remake job of the Chevron service station at Lee Road and Riverside Drive. The project calls for a full rebuilding and expansion of the business that owner Khosrow Haghshenas says will boast a gas station, carwash, a fully stocked convenience store, a restaurant and new fuel pump stations.

Haghshenas, who has owned the station since 1992, says the former aging store was well overdue for an upgrade. The building and pumps were torn out, the land shaved back and new concrete is being poured, the building is moving skyward and a reopening date approaches: July 15.

“There have been issues and some changes as the work goes,” Haghshenas said. “But I am pleased; it will look nice.”

Bill Neighbors, who has been helping Haghshenas with the project, said a restaurant deal is nearly sealed.

“We are 99.9 percent sure it will be Der Wienerschnitzel,” Neighbors said. “They seem to be real interested in the arrangement.”

Haghshenas said the station’s location helps draw thousands of customers because it’s the only gas station directly off Highway 1 between Capitola and Castroville.
