WATSONVILLE — The Watsonville man who purchased the Annie Nugent House in 1991 and spent thousands of dollars restoring it has put it up for sale.

Max Kelley, who owns the house located behind the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds on Rancho Brazil Lane in Watsonville, said he and his wife moved here to be closer to her parents. They have since died, and now Kelley hopes to move to San Raphael to be closer to his own family and his grandchildren, 2 and 4.

Kelley helped spearhead Community Alliance for Fairgrounds Accountability in 2011, a group that has fought with the fairgrounds over what it has called increasing noise and land use.

Even if he sells his house and moves, Kelley said the group’s efforts will not cease. With a steering committee of about 20 people and approximately 100 members, the group can run without him.
