GILROY — Nikki Hiltz watched her season-long goals come to fruition Friday night at Garcia-Elder Field.
The Aptos High junior won two championships in the Central Coast Section Track and Field Championship meet, claiming both the 800- and 1,600-meter runs.
Her two wins were historic, as well.
According to the CCS, she is the first girl since 1990 to successfully defend both titles in those two events.
With one more year of high school to go, she’ll have a chance to attempt something no other female runner has done: win both events for three straight years.
“It’s unreal,” Hiltz said of matching the 22-year record. “I definitely feel like it’s a compliment. I’m so thankful and grateful.”
