WATSONVILLE — Apparently, the Mount Madonna High boys volleyball team didn’t want to hurt a bug, as a player grabbed it and took it off the court.
The bug was spared.
Eastside College Prep was not.
The Hawks proved their worth of being the top seed in the Central Coast Section Division II tournament, squashing the visiting Panthers’ postseason hopes with a three-game win Thursday evening at the summit.
Mount Madonna prevailed 25-18, 25-15, 25-17 to advance to Saturday’s semifinals at Independence High, where it will face off against Willow Glen of San Jose.
Eastside showed early that it could hang with the hosts. Four straight points, which included a kill by Alonso Guerrero, gave the visitors a 7-5 advantage.
The teams traded points five consecutive times after that.
Mount Madonna then went on a 5-0 run highlighted by a David Broz kill and an ace by Ryan Alfaro to take a 15-12 lead.
The Hawks didn’t trail the rest of the way, and the game ended when Jake Getz hit a shot past two Eastside players that nearly went straight down.
From that point, it seemed as though Mount Madonna had weathered whatever storm Eastside brought to the summit.
