Editor’s note: This is the fifth in a series of profiles on the candidates running for the 2nd District supervisor seat.
WATSONVILLE — After eight years in the Watsonville city council, and being a former two-term mayor of Watsonville, Antonio Rivas said that his experience and familiarity with the community aided him with his decision to run for the Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors 2nd District seat.
“A lot of the community came to me and said, ‘Why don’t you run to represent us?’” Rivas said during a Thursday afternoon meeting with the R-P editorial board. “I can be able to understand and comprehend and also advocate for the needs of not only the south county, but also the mid-county, and that is something that is very important for me.”
Rivas served two terms as mayor of Watsonville in 2006 and 2008.
From his experience, Rivas said that it’s important for a candidate, who, once elected, will “already know what you need to do and what the needs are.”
