Commentary: Help us honor the best local athletes

Posted: Saturday, May 5th, 2012

I look forward to May for several reasons. The NBA and Stanley Cup playoffs are under way, and baseball season is motoring along.

I find May my start and end of the year for me. Among the reasons, it’s the month in which I was born.

May was also the month in which I returned to my hometown and started here at the Register-Pajaronian. It’s been a wild year full of action as well as memorable and forgettable moments.

When I returned to the area, my family asked me, “What are you going to do that’s different this time?” I didn’t know, initially.

I eventually told myself I wanted to do three things in the first 12 months that are memorable. I didn’t even know what those three things were, but I was going to find them.

Whether I’ve done three, I’m not sure, but here’s one of them: we are going to honor the best high school athletes in the region.

I’ve seen so many games — to be honest, I’ve probably attended more games this year than in the past 10 — and it’s been awesome to see all of the student-athletes compete for championships, personal-best marks and rivalry wins.

Next month, we’re going to have a Athletes of the Year feature, where we recognize the best multi-sport male and female competitors who have stood out above the rest.

You can help us out.

Send us your nomination of who should be considered for the Athletes of the Year feature. You can do it in a couple of ways:

• Email sports@register-pajaronian.com, subject line “Athlete of the Year Nomination,” and let us know who should be considered, the sports he or she played, and why.

• Fill out the form on page C3 and leave it at our office at 100 Westridge Drive, Watsonville.

• Tweet your nomination to twitter.com/GlennAtTheRP (just don’t tweet to me any quotes from Drake).

The more nominations, the better it’ll help us decide.

You have until May 31 to send us a nomination. Feel free to nominate multiple high school athletes.

We’ll announce the winners in June.

Glenn Cravens, who won’t say what day his birthday is this month, is the sports editor of the Register-Pajaronian. His commentary runs the first Saturday of every month. You can reach him at sports@register-pajaronian.com or twitter.com/GlennAtTheRP.
