WATSONVILLE — Robert F. Somers died at his home in Watsonville on Monday, April 23, 2012, surrounded by his family. He was 86 years old.
Mr. Somers was born in Ely, Minn. to Robert Somers and Beatrice Tolliver Somers. He served three years in the US Navy and eight years in the US Air Force, discharged in 1954. He was a member of the Disabled American Veterans and the Veterans of Foreign Wars. He retired from Lone Star Industries after more than 25 years, as a Master Machinist.
Mr. Somers was an avid sports fan and athlete, especially baseball. He managed many Mid-County Little League, Pony League, Colt League and Connie Mack teams between 1957 through 1972 and won 11 championships throughout the years. He loved children and was a generous and giving person, always helping anyone in need.
Mr. Somers is survived by his former wife, Joann Somers; step-children, Vickie (Tony) Schillinger, Jack (Lana) Schneider, Kelly (Richard) Zak, and Jeff Schneider; 11 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren; sister, Mildred Rowe of Minnesota; and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his wife, Susan Somers; brothers, Herman Blaske and George Somers; and sisters, Audrey Felger and Patricia Zamlen.
Per his wishes, private family services were held at Holy Cross Cemetery. Arrangements were entrusted to Mehl’s Colonial Chapel.
