Liontina C. Alves, longtime resident of Santa Cruz, passed away at her home on April 26, 2012. She was 99.
Mrs. Alves was born in the Azores on December 14, 1912 to Manuel and Maximiana Viera. In 1949 she married Joe Alves and devoted her life to taking care of her husband and family. She was known as a very sweet and loving person and loved to take road trips all over California and up to Oregon. When she was home she enjoyed gardening and growing flowers as well as spending time with her family and best friends, Fatima and Elizete.
Mrs. Alves is survived by her niece Maria (Joe) Terra of Santa Cruz and her great-niece, Stella Silveira of Santa Cruz; her other nieces, Lucia Dias of Modesto, Fatima Silva of Atwater, and Nuelia Carvalho of Livingston; her nephews, Manuel Barraso of Hilmar and Jeremias Barraso of Santa Cruz; her great-nephews, Carlos Silveira of Santa Cruz and Luis Silveira of Clearlake; her godson and cousin, David Alves and cousin Jorge Alves both of Watsonville; and her best friends, Fatima Silva of Watsonville and Elizete Nunes of Newman. She was preceded in death by her husband of 53 years, Joe Alves; her niece, Madalena Alves; and her nephew, Manuel Alves.
A visitation will be held at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel on Sunday, May 6, 2012 from 5-9 PM with a recitation of the Rosary at 7 PM. Mass will be celebrated at St. Patrick’s Church on Monday, May 7, 2012 at 10 AM with burial to follow at Watsonville Catholic Cemetery.For the complete article see the 05-03-2012 issue.
