John D. Nunes passed away Sunday April 22, 2012 at the age of 57 after his brave battle with liver cancer. John was born on the Island of Sao Jorge of the Azores. He immigrated with his family on New Year’s Eve 1959. John spent his life working in produce throughout the Pajaro Valley working with the Pista Brothers, John Lukerich’s various Strawberries companies as well as 20 years for Dick Peixoto Company. For the last year he worked as a security guard for Silent Alarm Security.
John was an avid fisherman and loved to work in his garden. He enjoyed showing off his garden’s bounty at the Santa Cruz County Fair every year wining countless blue ribbons for his pumpkins, carrots and herbs.
John is survived by his wife Cindy Nunes of 34 years, brothers Albert (wife Conceisco) of Le Grand, Manual (wife Joann) of Patterson, Ben (wife Rosa) of Salinas, and George (wife Arlene) of Watsonville , mother and father-in-law John and Jean Tomlinson, brother and sister-in-law Tom and Sandy Tomlinson, as well as numerous aunts, nieces, and nephews.
John was preceded in death by his Parents Francisco & Maria Nunes, brothers David, Frank and Joe.
Recitation of the Holy Rosary will be held on Sunday evening, April 29, 2012, 7:00 pm, Ave Maria Memorial Chapel, 609 Main Street, Watsonville, CA 95076, 831-724-4751. Memorial Mass will be held on Monday, April 30, 2012 at 11:00 am, Valley Catholic Church, with graveside services to follow at Valley Public Cemetery.
