MONTEREY — The Wildcatz were on the doorstep, twice.
Instead, it was Monterey High's boys volleyball that found a way to stun hard-charging Watsonville.
Monterey prevailed in five games on Thursday to win the Tri-County Athletic League's Coastal Division regular season title outright.
The Toreadores won 28-26, 23-25, 19-25, 25-18, 15-13 to finish the regular season 15-1. Watsonville, having its best season in school history, dropped to 13-3.
A relieved Monterey coach Dave Swartz said he was happy his team pulled off the victory on senior night.
"Watsonville is so good and so disciplined," Swartz said. "They have great ball control. In the fourth, we got the rotation we wanted and came back."
