The Monte Vista Christian School baseball team escaped Christopher High on Wednesday afternoon with a 3-2 win as the race for first in the Monterey Bay League got even tighter.
The win means both teams, as well as defending champion Monterey, all have two losses. Monte Vista Christian improved to 10-2 in league.
Down to its final out but with two on base, Christopher’s Nick Cordova hit a booming shot that was believed to be gone, but it wasn’t. It scored one run. The second runner tried to score as well, but was thrown out at home.
Bob Guerrero gave Monte Vista Christian a 3-1 lead in the seventh with a two-out RBI single that scored Zander Fischer-Tellez.
Earlier in the game, Guerrero executed a suicide squeeze that plated Fischer-Tellez.
Sam Thorne was the winning pitcher, giving up four hits while striking out 11 on 84 pitches.
