Dorothy E. Bassmann, 89, of Watsonville, California, passed away peacefully on April 22, 2012, at her home surrounded by family after a short battle with illness. She was preceded in death by her husband of 59 years, George Bassmann.
She was born July 19, 1922, on the Bonanza Ranch in Browns Valley, California, the daughter of the late James and Maude McDowell. Dorothy grew up on her family’s ranch and graduated from Marysville Union High School in 1940.
Dorothy married George Bassmann on November 15, 1942. In 1953, Dorothy and her husband moved to Watsonville, CA and raised three children – Dale, Jim and George.
She worked as a Telephone Operator for Pacific Bell after High School and later during World War II she worked as a Post Office Teller in Colusa, CA. In the early 60’s, she began working for Cabrillo College as a Data Processor and retired in 1979.
Dorothy’s loves were her family, friends, cooking, gardening, traveling and playing cards and Bunko. She was a proud mother and doting grandmother. She was loved and touched by all who knew her. Her memory is a blessing that will be cherished forever, and she will be deeply missed.
Dorothy leaves behind by her son; Dale Bassmann of San Mateo, son; Jim Bassmann and daughter-in-law, Karen Bassmann of Hollister, son; George Bassmann and daughter-in-law, Joan Bassmann of Watsonville. Grandchildren; Erin Bassmann, Lauren Bassmann, Cammy Allen and husband Jesse of San Mateo, Nick Bassmann, Ben Matlock, Jamie Bassmann, James Bassmann and wife Stephanie, Jeff Bassmann and wife Katie of Watsonville, and one great grandchild Kristin Bassmann of Watsonville.
A private memorial will be held for the family.
