Home track advantage wasn’t the only reason for Ryan Bernal’s win in the United States Auto Club’s Western Classic Series Friday night at Ocean Speedway.
The Hollister High senior holds two titles in Ocean’s 360 non-wing spec-sprint division. He won his first title and rookie of the year honors at age 14. He added a second track title and won rookie honors at Antioch Speedway two years after that.
His talent and expertise amazed USAC car owners winning the track title at Santa Maria Speedway and USAC’s West Coast 360 rookie title finishing second in the series in 2011.
A racing career that began at the age of 4 in quarter midgets, Bernal, now 18, is the current points leader in two USAC West Coast divisions. He leads Markus Niemela of Holland in the Western series and took the early lead in Friday night’s opening round of the Western Classic series.
