SALINAS — The howling winds that have taken up residence at North Salinas High since the school’s inception likely denied Watsonville High’s Brianna Cueva a personal best in the discus on Saturday afternoon.

Cueva still found a way to cut through the heavy breeze, as she threw the discus 121 feet, 6 inches to win the event at the Viking Invitational.

The Watsonville High junior posted the mark during the preliminaries. In the finals, she threw 117 feet, 1 inch, but the longer mark stood.

“I felt good,” Cueva said. “My spin has improved.”

Cueva was one of a couple of Wildcatz to win an event at the annual track meet.

Lamar Cowans blazed the track in the 100-meter run and barely prevailed with a time of 11.46 seconds.

His time was 0.04 seconds faster than Alvarez’s Quentin Minor, who entered the meet as the fastest sprinter in Monterey County.

North Monterey County’s Austin Decker once again soared to a personal best, eclipsing 14 feet, 9 inches in the pole vault. It was one inch better than what he was able to do one week ago at Leland High in San Jose.
