Maria C. Fernandez died on Wednesday, April 4, 2012, after a brief illness. She was 68.
Mrs. Fernandez came to Watsonville in 1964 where she first worked in the strawberry fields and years later became a beautician until she retired to watch her beloved grandchildren grow. She was a smart and charismatic woman who enjoyed walking and socializing.
Mrs. Fernandez is survived by her father, Bautista Castillo of Visalia; brothers, Jose (Gloria) of Visalia, David (Beatriz) and Roberto of Mexico, Jesus (Rosa), Bautista, Jr. (Candy), Mario (Maria Elena) and Guillermo all of Watsonville; sisters, Ana Maria (Eliseo), Alicia, and Lucila (Enrique) all of Watsonville; sons, Arturo (Rosa) of Oregon, Gonzalo (Connie), and Ramon of Watsonville; daughters, Yolanda (Roberto) Rubio, Luz Maria Fernandez of Watsonville; Rosa of Georgia, and Monica (Chris) of Salinas; 22 grandchildren and 6 great-grandchildren. The family would like to acknowledge her special caregivers at Country Villa, Alicia, Vanessa, and Fabian.
Visitation will be Sunday from 3-9 p.m. with a recitation of the rosary at 7 p.m. at Mehl’s Colonial Chapel. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Monday at 10 a.m. at Valley Catholic Church. Burial will follow at Valley Public Cemetery.
