Mio pitches Watsonville to victory over Grizzlies

WATSONVILLE — Kristina Mio took a no-hitter into the fifth inning but eventually finished with a shutout as the Watsonville High softball team routed rival Pajaro Valley 17-0.

The shy Mio let her pitching do all of the talking, as she allowed a walk to the first Pajaro Valley batter. Mio then retired the next 12 batters, with only two balls leaving the outfield.

Her no-hit bid was broken up with no outs in the fifth inning, as Jasmine Mar hit a grounder that skipped into centerfield.

The Grizzlies eventually loaded the bases but a grounder directly to Teresa Medrano ended the game.

The contest was called after five innings because of the mercy rule.

Mio was all smiles but didn’t say much about her outing today.

“I just hit my spots,” she said.

Watsonville broke the game open in the fourth inning by scoring 12 runs. Fifteen batters went to the plate as the Wildcatz got 10 hits in that frame.

Seven different players had more than two hits for Watsonville.

Mio said her screwball was her best pitch, as it kept Pajaro Valley off balance. She finished with three strikeouts.

“She’s a great athlete,” said Watsonville coach Art Doten. “She did a great job today.”

The win boosted Watsonville’s record to 7-7 overall. It snapped a two-game losing streak.

The Wildcatz will now have a week to get ready for a showdown with Christopher.
