Riggs Powell was named the Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League’s Most Valuable Player Wednesday by a vote of the football coaches.
Powell scored 26 touchdowns in the 2011 season, leading Aptos to an undefeated league title. He posted more than 1,000 rushing yards.
Powell was part of an Aptos offense that scored 30 points in all but one game this season. The Mariners twice had three-game stretches where they scored at least 42 points.
His teammate, Cody Capurro, was named the co-Defensive Player of the Year along with Robbie McClure of Scotts Valley.
Aptos’ Tanner Lardie was named co-Lineman of the Year aside Scotts Valley’s Joel Claassen.
Soquel’s Fabiano Hale was named the Junior of the Year. Hale had more than 1,300 yards on offense and scored 22 touchdowns. He averaged 8.4 yards a carry.
Aptos coach Randy Blankenship was named the Coach of the Year after leading the team to a league title. It was his first league title with Aptos.
