Jesse Henry Escalante, 83, died Tuesday, April 8, 2014 at home following a long illness. He leaves his wife of 35 years, Paula (Tuosto) Escalante; his son, Shawn Escalante, his daughter, Jessica Escalante and four grandchildren, numerous nieces and nephews and many dear friends. Born and raised in Watsonville, the son of Jesus and Trinidad Escalante. He graduated Watsonville High School in 1950 where he still holds the WHS 50-yard dash record. He enjoyed visiting with his friends at the many class reunions that followed. He was a veteran of the Korean War, serving with the US Air Force.
In 1955, he became a civil service employee working at Fort Ord, CA as an automotive mechanic, then a quality assurance inspector and ultimately in charge of the Support Maintenance Vehicle Shop. He retired after 35 years. He was an avid bowler at Cabrillo Lanes having named the bowling alley. He volunteered teaching young kids in the junior bowling program on Saturday mornings, influencing many. In retirement, he also enjoyed woodworking.
Funeral Mass will be Friday, May 2, 2014, at 11:30 am at St Maria Goretti Catholic Church, 8700 Bradshaw Road, Elk Grove, CA 95624. Reception to follow. We thank God for the gift of his life and the blessing of the time we spent together.
