Donald M. Gunderson, Sr. 79, of Salinas, passed away on November 30, 2012 at home. He was born on January 2, 1933 in San Francisco, CA.
Donald was enlisted in the U.S. Army in March, 1950, He completed boot camp on Fort Ord, CA, and was sent to Korea in September, 1950, after war broke out.
He was awared the Purple Heart, and the Purple Heart with three Battle Stars; the Korean Service War medal, Combat Infantry medal, the National Defense medal, Occupation of Japan medal, and the United Nations Korean Service medal.
Donald enoyed traveling, hunting and fishing. He especially loved spending time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Barbara I. Gunderson; daughters, Betty (Gary) Purcell, Bernice Romero, Annette (Ed) Reeder and Alberta (John) VanNest; sons, Don Gunderson and Rich (Cindy) Gunderson; 13 grandchildren and 23 great-grandchildren; along with numerous nieces, nephews, cousins and other loving family.
He is preceded in death by his first wife, Betty L. Gunderson and his daughter, Clara Lynch.
Visitation will be held today, Tuesday, December 4, 2012 1-9pm at Healey Mortuary 405 N. Sanborn Rd. Salinas, CA 93905.
Graveside Committal with Military Honors on Wednesday, December 5, 2012 10am at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery 32053 W. McCabe Rd. Gustine, CA 95322.
