John Edward McCain

John McCain peacefully passed away at his Watsonville home on November 20, 2012. John was born into a dairy family in Chino, California, on July 31, 1925. His family moved to Watsonville to farm apples in the Larkin Valley in 1939 as part of the Mount Madonna Apple Co-op. He was a distinguished athlete at Watsonville High, graduating in 1943, in time to join the Navy. He served during WWII as a boatswain’s mate on the carrier USS Cowpens, the first U.S. ship to sail into Tokyo Bay. Following his discharge he attended Salinas Junior College and U.C. Berkeley.

On July 2, 1949, John married Dolores Wagner. While raising four children he worked in diverse occupations throughout California, nevertheless he and his family returned repeatedly to live in Watsonville. In 1983 he and Dolores became partners in the family farming business, Quail Mountain Herbs, retiring in 2003. John was a skilled farmer and truly enjoyed the family business, helping it grow to eight farms throughout California.

John is survived by his four children; Carol (Kirk) Schmidt, Richard (Michelle) McCain, Ronald (Linda) McCain, Timothy (Kelli) McCain, as well as nine grandchildren; Jason, Jeffrey, and Jessica Schmidt, Sean and Brianna McCain, Kenneth and Benjamin McCain, Riker Hardy, and Philip Sorem. John’s loving wife, Dolores, predeceased him in 2008.

It was John’s wish not to have a memorial service. Donations in John McCain’s memory may be made to the Pajaro Valley Shelter Services and the Salvation Army. Arrangements were entrusted to Mehl’s Colonial Chapel, Watsonville.
