The undefeated St. Francis boys basketball team moved within a win of capturing the school’s first regular-season Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title in any sport with a 59-25 victory over visiting Soquel on Thursday.
The Sharks (20-0, 9-0) jumped out to a 10-0 lead and never looked back.
Shayne Perryman led the Sharks with 14 points and nine rebounds in just 16 minutes of play. Zach Scurich added 10 points and six rebounds and Curtis Gomez scored all nine of his points on 3-points and dished out five assists.
St. Francis, which entered the game allowing an area-low 40.7 points per game, held the Knights to six points or less in three quarters.
St. Francis will play at Scotts Valley tonight at 7. The game will be broadcast on KSCO Radio 1080-AM.

Santa Cruz 53, Aptos 44
Charlie Hinga had 12 points and six rebounds but the host Mariners fell to second-place Santa Cruz in a SCCAL game Friday.
Puma Singh added six points and eight rebounds.

Pajaro Valley 58, North County 41
Dusty Magaña scored 20 points to lead the Grizzlies to a Monterey Bay League win Thursday.
Also for Pajaro Valley, Jay Connor Holbert had 10 points and Alex Delgadillo and Adrian Martinez each scored nine points.
Austin Self led North Monterey County with 13 points. Austin Bingham and Matt Monges each added 10 points.
Both teams are now 3-5 in league play.

Seaside 62, Watsonville 54
The Wildcatz led by as many as 11 points in the second quarter, but host Seaside rallied in the second half Thursday.
For Watsonville (2-6 MBL), Jacob Rodriguez and Ivo Basor each scored 16 points, while Dominic Acosta had six points and seven rebounds and Nestor Maraña added seven points and five assists.
Alex Hodge led Seaside (6-2 MBL) with 20 points.

Josh Mooney scored 19 points, but Monte Vista Christian fell to MBL-leading Monterey on Thursday.
Jon Wylie added 15 points for the Mustangs (2-6 MBL).

Watsonville 3, Monte Vista 1
David Ortega, German Llamas and Luis Oranduin scored a goal apiece for the Watsonville High boys soccer team in an MBL win over visiting Monte Vista Christian on Friday.
Giovanni Robledo added two assists for the Wildcatz (12-3-1, 5-0-1), who are scheduled to play rival Pajaro Valley today at 2 p.m. at Aptos High.
David Muñoz made four saves in the first half, after which Watsonville led 2-0. Jorge Martinez made seven saves in the second half.

Natasha Tapia made eight saves, but the St. Francis girls soccer team lost to Santa Cruz in a SCCAL game Thursday at Depot Park in Santa Cruz.

Elks Hoop Shoot
Locals don’t advance
Watsonville’s two district Elks Hoop Shoot champions, Marisa Magaña and Christian Preciado, fell short of winning at the state finals Jan. 30 in Sacramento.
Among those headed to the Western States finals in Las Vegas is a 12-year-old girl from Placerville who made all 25 of her attempts.
