WATSONVILLE — Two big pieces of this year’s Monte Vista Christian Mustangs girl’s basketball team will continue playing in college on opposite sides of the United States.

Myckenzie Toler committed to play basketball at the United State Merchant Marine Academy in New York and Greer Watson signed on to play at Gavilan College.

Surrounded by friends, family and teammates both signed their letter of intent Wednesday.

Toler and Watson both started all 23 games for the Mustangs this season, and helped their team to a second place finish in the Monterey Bay League Gabilan and quarterfinals of the Central Coast Section Division-IV playoffs.

Toler averaged 10.8 points, 2.6 assists and 2.9 assists per game and was selected to the All Register-Pajaronian Basketball team, as well as the MBL-Gabilan first team.

She said she expects a lot of pushups, traveling and basketball at the next level.

“It’s the complete experience,” Toler said. “You can’t go there because you want to just play basketball. You have to go because you want to serve your country.”

Watson averaged 5.4 points and 3.2 rebounds per game as the Mustangs’ starting center.

She hopes to lend the Rams a hand in becoming a power while developing her skills to show that she’s more than just a 6-foot-2-inch frame.

“I just want to get better,” Watson said. “I want to be more rounded as a player.”

Watson plans to transfer out and play at four-year university after her stay at Gavilan.
