WATSONVILLE — Corralitos’ Jerry Bonnema scored a perfect “3” and two-time Ocean sprint car champion Brent Kaeding won the opening round Friday night on the quarter-mile clay oval at the Santa Cruz County Fairgrounds.
Bonnema, a veteran racer, is an electrical contractor by trade. But racing remains his passion for achievement. The talented racer with a small budget recorded the third fastest time from a field of 24 cars, finished third in his heat race and third in the 30-lap main event.
The veteran’s podium also included second-place finisher Jonathan Allard of Chico; a three-time King of the West champion.
The dry-slick track conditions played well for the two front row starters. Allard led the way with Kaeding glued to his bumper. On lap six Allard hit a bump in the road, lost traction and spun his tires that allowed Kaeding to drive by him like he was standing still.
“I’m thankful for the help we have getting the car set up,” Kaeding said. “They did a heck of a job getting chassis adjustments and tire pressures just right for the dryer track conditions.”
Carson Macedo and Shane Golobic, 2012 Taco Bravo champion, completed the top five.
