The Aptos Mariners have relied heavily on the run, but so far they havenít had to do anything else.
Marinersí running back Michael Chavez was their homerun hitter in their first round Central Coast Section Division-III game against the Aragon Dons.
The 6-foot-1-inch, 187-pound junior took off for a 37-yard score on his first carry, and followed that up with a 25-yard touchdown operating out of the wingback position of their wing-t offense.
Chavez also played on the defensive side of the ball, and was all over the field getting in on tackled and locking up receivers.
The Mariners are going to need a repeat performance from Chavez, when Willow Glenn comes to town Friday.
Madi Dueckís tough serving allowed the Aptos Mariners to steal Game 2 away from the Valley Christian Warriors, who were the No. 1 seed in the Central Coast Section Division-III playoffs and a top ten team in the state.
The sophomore libero had 12 digs and four aces in the Marinersí 25 --17, 16-25, 25-16, 25-11 loss to the Warriors Wednesday night at Valley Christian High School.
Dueck will be a key returner for the Mariners next season for a team who will return many big pieces for another run at a CCS championship and Santa Cruz Coast Athletic League title.
The Mariners will lose starters Jenna Belton and Taylor Guys, but starters Claire Coash, Elise Coash and Maddy Bol will all return.
