Santa Cruz rallies in fourth to beat RGV

Posted: Saturday, Mar 16th, 2013

A massive 24-2 run to end the game helped the Santa Cruz Warriors storm back to defeat the Rio Grande Valley Vipers 114-104 on Friday night in Hidalgo, Texas.

The Warriors held the Vipers to eight fourth-quarter points in winning their fifth consecutive game. The Vipers’ four-game winning streak came to an end.

Santa Cruz also took advantage of a heated Rio Grande Valley squad, who saw several members get fouled up. Glen Rice Jr. was ousted with two technical fouls. Embattled rookie Royce White fouled out — he had 13 points — and coach Nick Nurse received two technical fouls.

A Rice three-pointer with 7:08 to go boosted Rio Grande Valley’s lead to 102-90. The Warriors then began their slow ascent back. They tied the game on a Darington Hobson dunk that was fueled by a Stefhon Hannah pass. After a Vipers miss, the Warriors came back and took the lead on a Cameron Jones three-pointer with 2:42 to go in the game.

The Warriors fended off Rio Grande Valley the rest of the way.

Hannah scored 22 points to lead the Warriors. Hilton Armstrong powered the inside and finished with 20 points on 6-for-9 shooting; he also grabbed 11 rebounds. Hobson had 13 points and seven rebounds.

The teams were even at 52-52 after two quarters of play. Former Los Angeles Laker Andrew Goudelock pulled the teams even with a turnaround jumper with 21 seconds to go in the quarter.

Newest Warrior Scott Machado had seven points in 16 minutes.

Jones had 15 points, Lance Goulbourne put in 11 points and nine rebounds, and Mickell Gladness had 10 points.

The win moved Santa Cruz to 27-13 on the season. They remained one game back of the Bakersfield Jam in the West Division. Bakersfield routed the Reno Bighorns 115-102.

The Warriors travel to the Dallas area today to face the Texas Legends in a matinee.
