MVC goes to Gabilan for hoops

WATSONVILLE — The 2013-14 Monterey Bay League winter sports season will have some Watsonville flavor in both divisions when it comes to basketball and soccer.

The league’s Board of Managers approved changes to the Gabilan and Pacific divisions earlier this month for basketball and soccer. Unlike the fall sports which had several changes, only a couple of teams moved around in the winter sports. Wrestling went unchanged.

In basketball, both changes involved the Monte Vista Christian boys and girls teams, which both ended up champions in the Pacific Division this past season.

The Mustangs’ boys team will move up to the Gabilan Division, replacing Alvarez. The girls team will also go to the Gabilan Division, replacing Alisal.

There’s a common thread among those two changes. The champions are replacing the teams that finished last in the division.

“There’s a presumption that the last team in the Gabilan will change with the first team in the Pacific,” said MBL Commissioner Tim McCarthy. “That’s the only presumption made before the meeting, and it has to be a vote of the coaches that will be strong enough to change that.”
